Garland

Garland

Biography

Garland is a mysterious old man who acts as one of the main antagonists of Final Fantasy IX. Garland doesn't appear to the party until later in the game, but his actions before and during the timeline of events throughout the game directly cause many of the problems that the party faces. Garland is cold, emotionless, and clearly has some deeper connection with Kuja, another antagonist. Garland also has a connection with Zidane, of which Zidane is unaware.

Garland was created by the people of Terra, as they needed someone who could manage the ascension of their souls as the Terran people slept. Garland is responsible for the creation of all the Genomes, as well as Zidane and Kuja, who are advanced Genomes. Garland dubbed Kuja a failure, as he was not emotional enough to experience Trance, and created Zidane to replace him. This was a miscalculation on Garland's part, as Kuja was emotional enough to be jealous of Zidane. Kuja took Zidane to Gaia, away from Garland.

Garland was responsible for many of the events in the past which shaped the backstories of members of Zidane's group. Garland had Madain Sari destroyed years before the events of the game, which shaped the lives of both Princess Garnet and Eiko. Garland was also responsible for the function of the Iifa Tree and its byproduct of Mist, shaping the lives of Vivi and anybody else who spent time on the Mist Continent.
