Biography
Steiner is one of the main characters of Final Fantasy IX and acts as a foil for Zidane for much of the game. He is brash, impulsive, and loyal to the royal family of Alexandria. His personal duty is to ensure the safety of Princess Garnet, and is so hard-headed about it that he often fails to recognize that others are also acting in what they perceive as her best interest. At the start of the game, Steiner is tasked with finding the Princess, who has run away from the castle during the performance by Lindblum's Theater Troupe, Tantalus. As it turns out, Tantalus is there to kidnap Princess Garnet, so Steiner is naturally at odds with the group. Despite the group's intentions being good and sincere, it takes quite a while for Steiner to realize that he needs to work with the group to help her. Throughout the adventure, Steiner's changes in attitude comes mainly at the lead of Garnet, who continues to surprise and impress him with her personal growth.Steiner is a physical character by nature and also acts as a "tank" of sorts, with high HP and the ability to equip heavy armor and headgear. He is one of the strongest physical attackers in the game, fighting with swords and knight swords. Steiner's unique commands in battle are Sword Art and Sword Magic. Sword Art allow Steiner to make a variety of different attacks on the enemy using his sword, including some heavy attacks and abilities that deal damage based on his current HP. Sword Magic only appears in combat if Vivi is in battle and allows Steiner to use elemental attacks with his sword, often dealing massive damage if they exploit an elemental weakness.
Steiner's first major display of independence comes when multiple groups converge in Alexandria to save Garnet from Queen Brahne, Zorn and Thorn. Steiner finally realizes that Brahne is toying with Garnet's life to aid herself politically, and he returns to the fight with Beatrix - having a similar revelation of her own - to stop the pursuing forces and allow Garnet to escape with Zidane and Vivi. Though he tasks Vivi with keeping the Princess safe, the subtext indicates that this is the first time he truly recognizes Zidane as somebody who, in his eyes, can protect the Princess as well as he can.
Following Garnet's coronation as the new Queen of Alexandria and the events of Memoria, Steiner and Beatrix remain in Garnet's employ as her head royal guards.

Trance
Steiner's Trance gives him full plate armor complete with a full face guard. His attack power triples, allowing him to do massive damage in combat. Aside from the extreme increase in physical attack, Steiner does not gain any additional abilities by being in Trance.
