Final Fantasy 6 was released in the U.S. in October of 1994 for the SNES console under the name Final Fantasy 3 (being the third game of the series released in the U.S.). Final Fantasy has been a popular series in Japan since it's inception in 1987. The series became popular in the western part of the globe with the release of Final Fantasy 7 (1997) for the Playstation console. Final Fantasy 6 was re-released in 1999 as part of Final Fantasy Anthologies, paired with the previously unreleased Final Fantasy 5 for the Playstation console.Final Fantasy VI starts out by introducing Wedge and Vicks, two soldiers working for the imperial army. Also joining the soldiers is a nameless, mysterious girl. Each armed with a superior machine known as MagiTek armor; the party invades the powerful town of Narshe. While the true meaning of the invasion is unclear, the troops are sent to retrieve a mythical beast (known as Espers) that had been uncovered by the Narshites. However, finding resistance to the invasion, affirmative action is needed.
Once the group finds the creature, they find it has a connection between the nameless girl. The girl slips into submission.
After she awakens, she finds herself inside a house in Narshe. Her memory has been tarnished and unable to remember anything, except that her name is Terra. The old man (Arvis) who rescued the girl reveals that the Empire, whom had called for the invasion, was using her for their own deeds. The Narshian guards begin a search for Terra and punish her for her involvement with the invasion. As soon as they find out her position, Arvis sends her fleeing into the mines. A pursuit incurs which pauses after Terra falls into a mine shaft.
Meanwhile, Arvis sends a bold, dashing, young "treasure-hunter" (Locke) out to protect Terra from the soldiers who are out for her arrest. Finding her conscious in a mine shaft, Locke fends off a Narshian assault and escapes with Terra out of Narshe and to the desert kingdom of Figaro, a kingdom rich in technology. Locke, who has known the king for some time, confronts the ruler of the desert kingdom (Edgar) and explains how the Empire was using Terra for their own evil aspects.
A sudden visit from the Empire to Figaro castle first introduces us to the motley, psychotic villain (Kefka). Searching for the girl, the Empire tracked her to Figaro. Edgar simply denies ever seeing her. Kefka leaves, but not before threatening Edgar's kingdom if he does know of the girl. The next morning, the king is awakened by a blazing inferno engulfing his castle. Through an elaborate plan of deception, Edgar, Locke, and Terra escape the clutch of Kefka and the Empire... for now.
As they escape, Edgar and Locke reveal that they are apart of an organization called the Returners, a rebellion against the Empire. They show their hopes of Terra joining the Returners. But is Terra ready to fight the powerful imperial machine when she knows nearly nothing about herself?
Throughout the game, the player is introduced to a cast of characters with their own reasons for fighting against the Empire, learn more about Espers and the War of the Magi, and fight against the Empire with a surprising twist at every corner.
