Biography

Cid is a main character of Final Fantasy IX, though he only joins the party for about as brief a moment as you can get. Cid is the Regent of Lindblum and acts as an uncle to Princess Garnet, thought the two are not actually related. His position of leadership in the world political scene as well as his relationship with Princess Garnet allow him to serve as a defacto leader of the party from afar, giving them guidance, transportation, and often new destinations in the journey.

Cid is behind the kidnapping plot executed by Tantalus, having ordered Baku to abduct the Princess under the guise of giving her the performance as a birthday present. However, when the team returns to Lindblum with the Princess in tow, they are surprised to see that he is an Oglop, having been transformed by a thief in the castle who came to steal Cid's airship. Cid is a mechanical genius…at least while he is a human. His altered form proves difficult for the party as he no longer has the engineering mind to build them new transportation.

In an attempt to gain new transportation, the group undergoes the task of brewing a potion to restore Cid's form. It isn't completely successful, as it instead transforms him into a frog.

The group learns later on that the original transformation story wasn't the entire truth, as the "assailant" who stole the airship and transformed Cid was none other than his wife, Hilda, who was upset at him for being unfaithful in their marriage. Once she is rescued from Kuja's grasp, she restores Cid to his normal form and he is able to return to building new airships. Following the events of the game, Cid and Hilda's marriage has recovered enough for the two of them to adopt Eiko as their daughter.

Cid's entry into the party as a gameplay mechanic is extremely short-lived, as he takes the party through two minigames in the Desert Palace as a way of freeing the party from Kuja's grasp.
