Job Analysis
The Thief is an unusual character to work with. Though he has decent attacking potential and a passable HP count, his inability to equip the best weapons and armor makes him a second-class warrior compared to the Warrior or the Monk, particularly later on. The Thief is also incapable of casting any magic. And unlike notable thieves from other Final Fantasy games, the Thief does not possess the ability to steal valuable items from his enemies. The Thief's only true advantage is that he is very good at running away; on those occasions when retreat is the best option, the Thief performs admirably. Still, the Thief is substandard compared to the other classes, unable to fit into a specific role like the Warrior or Black Mage and lacking the tools to be a versatile character like the Red Mage. So how is the Thief useful at all, you ask? Actually, putting up with him is a careful investment. No other character benefits as much from the class change as the Thief does, as he will eventually metamorphose into the all-powerful Ninja.
