28. The Rainbow Shell
Enemies: | Gigasaur, Leaper, Lizardactyl, Fossil Ape |
Treasures: | Sight Cap, Power Tab x3, FullEther, Blue Rock, ZodiacCape, Lapis, FrenzyBand |
The item that the Guru of Time mentioned that sparkles like a rainbow is located in the Middle Ages. In this quest, you can make Crono's ultimate weapon, as well as some fantastic armor and one of the best accessories in the game. Begin by heading to the Choras Village in 600 A.D., and into the Cafe. Remember Toma from way back? Talk to him.
Talking to Toma will give you an item called TomasPop. He tells you to pour it on his gravestone if he ever dies. Well, head to 1000 A.D. and you can do just that!
Go to the West Cape and pour TomasPop on his grave. Toma's ghost will appear and tell you that the Rainbow Shell is on an island to the northwest. Of course, he thinks he's still back in the Middle Ages, so you'll have to travel back to 600 A.D. before you can go get it. Before you leave the area, check behind Toma's grave and grab a Speed Tab.
When you enter, you'll see a crumpled note from Toma saying that he should jump into some holes. Go into the next room, grab the Sight Cap from the chest and then go down the ladder to the right. Follow the path, fighting the Lizardactyls, and go to the next area.
The middle and topmost switch causes a save point to appear, and the left opens some holes. The right causes Apes to fall from the ceiling, but they'll fall through the hole. Fall through the hole after them and fight them, then step on the left switch. Go through the skull's mouth and get the Power Tab, then exit. Walk to the left and climb down the ladder, getting the FullEther and another Power Tab, then walk around the loop and get the Blue Rock hidden behind the mountain near the exit to the right.
Go east and follow all the ladders down, then exit into a room that looks reminiscent of the Tyrano Lair. Go through the left mouth and then turn left again to get a FrenzyBand. Then go back and through the right door, where you'll fight Rubble from Mt. Woe that give 100 Tech Points. Follow the path right and open the "chest" that sends you down one floor.
After getting out of the prison that you fall in, head left and up the stairs to grab the Power Tab, then go back down and head right until you get to more stairs. Save your game and go through the door and try to sneak past the giant dinosaur to start the boss fight.

Chomp Roar! Tyrano Flame | None Strategy A party of Crono, Robo, and Ayla works well, again, because of the abundance of wonderful techs. Equip Red Mail and Red Vests to absorb his fire attacks, and you basically have it made. Substituting Crono with Frog also works well because of Leap Slash and Robo and Frog's dual tech Cure Wave. | |
After the battle, your three party members will ask King Guardia for his help in getting the Rainbow Shell out of the cave. Because this quest is so related to another one, you can get the best weapons by continuing with King Guardia's Trial.
